Ah, the Media Blitz

I really find it interesting, when there is a new movie coming out, the sheer volume of media blitz that accompanies it. And, as we live in the world, we are all subject to the hype. Lately, it has been the movie “300“. I see commercials for it on television, there is a billboard on the expressway advertising it, even the bus stop closest to my house has it as the background.

So I see these images. I am inundated by these images. I start hearing the clip waking, sleeping, working, eating, smoking – it won’t leave me.

But here’s the thing: I don’t want to see the movie. It looks terrible. But. . . I really enjoyed reading The Histories of Herodotus. So, what’s the solution? I picked up Herodotus again. It’s been nine years (since a very good friend of mine wrote an undergraduate thesis on him) since I’d read it. So I picked it up the other day. What happened? I’m glad I rhetorically asked myself that. Suddenly, the media blitz became inconsequential.

And believe me, typewritten eye-candy is far superior to computer animated eye-candy.

  1. Hi Mike,
This is Bob from the Shrine. I enjoyed chatting with you and your tribe today. After we got home, Sara – who is a serious blog addict, but gave it up for Lent – managed to find both of your blogs in about 90 seconds, and proceeded to tell me the links while managing to not spend too much time there.
In any case, I actually have a question for you. But rather than communicating through the comment thread on your blog, maybe you could email me and we could go from there?
    Salutations,
    Bob
